SOUP. SOUP. It's all about soup! Tips, tricks, recipe's and more.

Updated: Jan 27, 2022

Soup is such a simple, flexible, inexpensive food to prepare. The possibilities are endless, it warms your body and is good for your soul! You can make a noodle soup, a bean soup, a broth soup, it can be creamy, vegetarian, or loaded with meat. You can serve it hot or cold, with crackers or bread, plain or loaded with toppings. The choice is yours. I encourage you to start trying your hand at making homemade soup!

January 11, 2022 THE FOUNDATION OF SOUP MAKING AKA the trinity of soup. Sautee onions, celery & carrots in either butter or oil of your choice. Every recipe has different amounts, but this isn't rocket science. I add what I have. Sometimes, that means less onions & more celery, other times it's heavy on the carrots. Once I've sautéed these ingredients I add them, butter and all to the boiling pot of water.

To make it have more of a Cajun flair, use green bell peppers instead of carrots. I'm not a bell pepper fan, so I've never tried it.

January 17, 2022 DO YOU DIP?

I personally like to dip warmed bread in my creamy soup and toasted crackers in my broth soup.

January 19, 2022 CHEESY SOUPS!

I just made the best cheddar broccoli soup. I'm not going to lie, it wasn't "totally" homemade, but it sure tasted great. No, it wasn't a condensed soup. It was the cheddar broccoli soup mix from the Franz Bread Store. I bought it a while back and it has just been sitting on the shelf waiting for a rainy day. Well, in my case, a snowy day and no power. It was delicious and super easy. Just mix with water.

January 21, 2022 ADDING MEAT....NOT HIPPOPOTAMUS The earliest soup dates back to 6000BC and it was hippopotamus. Well, I highly doubt any of us will be adding that to our soup, but we can get just as creative. When it comes to soup, you can add pretty much anything! I like to make a couple extra pieces of bacon and then the next day add it to a baked potato soup. I've been known to take one leftover bratwurst and add it to the lentil soup. Have leftover ham from a holiday, make a split pea or navy bean and ham soup. Same goes for chicken or turkey. You can make a chicken dish one night, then use any leftover chicken to make a hearty chicken noodle soup. The beautiful thing about adding meat to a soup, is you can make a little bit go a long way. So if you are on a budget, go ahead, cook up a big pot of heart warming soup this cold winter. It's cheap and your family will thank you!

January 26, 2022 7 SECRETS TO MAKE ANY SOUP BETTER

There are simple things you can do to make any soup just a little bit better. The professionals say to sear the meat, roast the veggies, use homemade stock, throw a bit of hard cheese in the pot, add fresh herbs & dairy before serving, mix up the texture and add a bit more salt & pepper. For me, I always add a bay leaf. I agree with mixing up texture. When I make lentil soup, I add 1/4 of macaroni right at the end. My sister in law claims she made the best broth when she bought the $3 misfit box from the fruit stand. She literally just simmered all the veggies, all day long for the best tasting homemade broth ever.
