Cancer Alliance: Harbor Hope

Every year we get to sit down and listen. This year a local palliative care physician walked in and told us about a charity so small and so intentional that most people in Grays Harbor County have never heard of it. That is exactly the point.

She calls it the ninja charity. No website. No application process. No red tape. Just a doctor who watched cancer patients' finances collapse alongside their health and decided to do something about it. Without anyone ever knowing who helped.

She has spent her career watching it happen. A 30 year old father who just got his commercial driver's license, took out a loan for a big rig, and was diagnosed with melanoma of the eye. His eye was removed. He lost his CDL. The truck was repossessed. His family started to unravel. Government assistance programs had endless forms that would take months to process. In the meantime, how does he pay rent?

"We are neighbors helping neighbors. Every dollar given to our charity has always gone to the patients." Cancer Alliance of Grays Harbor

Ninja Charity

Harbor Hope Crisis Response doesn't work like a traditional assistance program. Cancer patients don't know it exists. They don't apply for it. They don't fill out forms. The people already caring for them, their doctors, their social workers, their care teams, are the ones who see the need and quietly act on it.

When a social worker sees a patient struggling, they fill out a simple one page form and submit it. The patient's name is blocked out. A small board reviews it and votes. Within 24 hours the PUD bill is paid, the rent is covered, the groceries are bought. The patient never knows who did it. When they ask, the answer is simple. It is just neighbors, helping neighbors.

The board members pay for stamps and supplies out of their own pockets. Every single dollar donated goes directly to patients. Not overhead. Not administration. Patients. It has been that way since 2008. Local Impact:

41 Patients assisted in 2025

52 Distributions made to families in crisis

100% Of every dollar donated goes directly to patients

What cancer really costs

A single woman diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer suddenly had to stop working. Radiation every day. Gas money gone. Wages gone. Medical bills piling up. She told her social worker she was more overwhelmed by her financial situation than her cancer. The social worker submitted a form. Harbor Hope paid her PUD bill and her rent so she could focus on getting better.

That is what this program does. It steps in before a financial crisis becomes the thing that breaks a family already fighting for their life. And it can only do that when the funds are there. When donations are strong they help more. When funds are low they have to do less. It really is that simple and that honest.

A community that shows up

A high school student whose mom worked in oncology heard about the charity and organized an auction herself. She raised $8,000. A coffee shop handed over their card after a 10 minute presentation. The Eagles in Ocean Shores is donating this year's fundraising proceeds. This is what happens when neighbors help neighbors.
